A Long-Time-No-Update Upadte! - August 22nd, 2006
Well, with nearly 30,000KM on the car since the Auto-To-Manual swap in November 2005, I think it is safe to say the swap as a complete success!! I have done nothing but drive the car since then! Only a few other minor mods in the past few months, they are listed below.
SPS 52mm Throttle Body
Diamond Clear Bumper Lenses
Bridgestone Potenza G009 205/55R15 tires
Manual Transmission Swap is Complete - November 1st, 2005
Back in the middle of October, I was on my way home from North Bay when another shift solenoid in my transmission went out. This made the THIRD time in the last 100,000 km that this has happened. So I decided I was not spending another penny on this automatic and it was time for a swap to manual shifting! I started rounding up parts from various sources and after a couple of weeks of constant nothing going right, we got everything swapped over and the car is running great. Below is a list of what I purchased for the swap.
Manual transmission from a 1992 SL1 (MP2)
Used shifter and shifter cables
Clutch pedal assembly OEM from Saturn
Master/Slave cylinder OEM from Saturn
DynaPak/Valeo clutch kit from Odrowski Automotive
Used flywheel from Rock City, machined by Unapco machine shop
Winter is Back Already - December 4th, 2004
The Snow-Dubs are back on and the snow is falling! I bought a new set of Kumho Izenwis KW19 snow tires, 185/65R14, to fit on the 14" steelies I had given to me this summer. I got my bumper and fenders repainted, along with a new rad and A/C condensor. A lot of stuff breaks when an animal runs out in front of you on the highway at 100 km/h
I'm working full time at MiTech Computer Services, but I don't make much... I have enough to get by and I'm saving up for a few small mods. Nothing much until I find a job closer to my career goals.
Spring is Here, Lots of New Stuff - April 25th, 2004
I haven't had much time to update the site in the last few months, so here goes... I've had my urethane front bumper since February. I haven't had the extra cash to have it installed or painted yet, so it is still just sitting in the garage. In the past week, I receieved and installed a HotShot header and a new catalytic converter. This has really helped my car's overall running performance. The old cat was very plugged up and the car didn't run well when it got warm. I decided that a HotShot header would be a much more simple mod than trying to re-weld a 92 OEM header.
I haven't put the TSWs back on yet, mainly because I have a wheel bearing going and I want to wait until I get that fixed. The rear brake conversion is still on hold due to lack of extra funds. I'm not working a whole lot right now, so extra stuff is at a minimum.
Some News of the New Year - January 21st, 2004
Well, things are really starting to come together this year for my car. I have the Extreme Dimensions / Aeroduo urethane front bumper on order (should be here any time now) and I am trying to decide what to do for side skirts and possibly the rear. I also have a complete rear disc brake conversion sitting in my basement. My other little project is modifying a 92 OEM header so that it can be used on my '01 DOHC motor. I bought a new 9-bolt flange off E-bay, so once that arrives, I will go shopping for a cheap OEM header that I can hack up.
I also recently purchased an OBD2 interface made by ScanTool.net that I hope to integrate into the car as well. I still want to build my car PC, but I can just use my laptop for now. This interface works very well, I am happy with it.
Overall, both cars are doing well this winter. I am trying to drive the yellow one as little as possible, but it still goes out a few times a week. The 92 has a little over 255,000 km on it and still going strong :-)
Oh, and my clear corner lights for the 92 came in today as well. I got a great deal on a used set, thanks Stephen!
Today I Bought A 1993 SC2 For Parts - November 3rd, 2003
Got myself a good deal today! Bought a 1993 SC2 for $200. It was in a front-end collision and the owners didn't want to bother trying to fix it. It is the same color as my 1992. The best part, it has a shitload of new parts. Here is a quick list of what they told me is new. The parts are still shiny so I know they aren't lying!
All of the above parts were changed in the last 3-4 months and have very little miles on them.
- Four brand new 205/60R15 tires on the OEM alloys (same as on my 92, but in better shape)
- Complete brand new rear brakes - calipers, pads, rotors and possibly lines
- Brand new front rotors and pads
There are many other good parts including a good running engine, rust-free sunroof glass and newer muffler. I haven't had time to go over it yet to see what else might be good. I'll basically be stripping the car, keeping all the parts above plus the entire driveline, all suspension parts and wheel bearings among other things. To make a long story short, A DAMN GOOD DEAL! I'll have pics up in a day or too.
It's Been A While Since An Update - April 4th, 2003
I ordered the Eibach springs today from Chris at Slick's Performance here in North Bay. He has picked up a lot of new distributors and he is working on a list of stuff that he can get for my car. If everything goes according to plan, I should have it lowered with my TSWs back on by the end of April. Maybe the snow will all be gone by then...
The 92 SC is doing great! I've been driving it daily for the last few weeks with no problems at all. I am changing the rear rotors and pads this weekend because they are getting very thin and just barely passed the safety. I've got funky vibration problems in the front of this one too... I had the tires rebalanced today, and for a while it seemed to get worse after the balance... but after a bit of driving it, started to go away again. Other than that minor little problem, it's been well worth buying so far :-)
I'm heading down to London on the 12th of April to meet up with a crew of about 10-15 other Saturn people. If anybody who reads this is interested in coming, drop me an e-mail and I'll send you the details!
That's it for now I guess, time for bed!
I BOUGHT THE CAR - January 25th, 2003
Yup, that's right, I bought it!! The car was in too good of shape to leave it behind! One-owner car that was bought brand new in 1992 by a very nice family. It took us a few hours to get it driveable (had to gut the cat), but it was well worth the time and effort and the $1600. For all the details, go to the new section of my site dedicated to the 1992 SC.
Going To Ottawa This Weekend - January 23rd, 2003
It has been a while since I made any updates, so I guess it is about time. I am going down to Ottawa this weekend to look at another Saturn. It is a 1992 SC, teal-blue in color, 5-speed, power windows, locks, mirrors, power sunroof, ABS, A/C (not working), 233,000 km. The car looks to be in great shape for $1600.00 CDN. It needs a catalytic convertor.
Some General Updates - December 2nd, 2002
I'm just making some updates to the page tonight, but I've got a few things to talk about. The car is running good lately, although it suffered a few nasty days earlier in November. My tranny suddenly started to shift very harshly in all gears including reverse. Turned out to be the Line Pressure Solenoid. $300 CDN taxes included, and that also includes the cost of an engine coolant change. I was 4,000km out of warranty when the solenoid went :-( It still has odd little miss-firing problems now and then, but we can't narrow it down to anything specific because it is so random! It seems to depend on the weather, and when it is cold out, it is fine.
Other than that, not much new with my car. Still wanting to lower it, as well as a few other simple appearance mods like the clear side markers and different guage faces. XRC bodykit is very sweet, but I can't afford that until I am done school.
I've Started School! YAY! - October 7th, 2002
Today was my first day of school! I am taking a one year compressed college program that will give me a Computer Systems Engineer Diploma as well as my A+, MCSE, and Cisco certifications. It is equivalent to a regular 3-year college course, all packed into 11 months! I'm looking forward to it all.
Road Trip to Meet Kruz'n Obsessionz - July 20th, 2002
I finally made the trip down to Toronto to meet up with Jeremy and Valentino from the Kruz'n Obsessionz car club. They both have Saturns, Jeremey has a 2000 SL1 and Valentino has a 1998 SC1. Be sure to check out the Kruz'n Obsessionz web site, http://saturnd00d.tripod.ca
Custom Intake Made - July 14th, 2002
I finally found the right size of PVC piping to make my own custom intake. I simply attached the cone filter to the end of the stock intake tube. Simple, effective, works. I'll have some pics once I make the mounting bracket and paint it.
Got Different Tires Today - June 8th, 2002
The Kumho tires caused a bad vibration in my car. Or, more specifically, they amplified a small vibration that exists in the car and made it so bad that I couldn't stand to drive it. So, with the excellent troubleshooting efforts from Shayne at Brook's Tire in North Bay, he replaced my tires for free. I now have a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE-92s in 205/55R15. The vibration is now no worse than with the stock rims and tires.
Rims and Tires On! YAY!! - April 9th, 2002
I put my rims and tires on today! YAY! They look awesome, they ride good, and they handle great :-) I'll have more updates soon! Be sure to check out the pictures in the Photo Gallery!
Exhaust Installed and Sounding Good! - April 5th, 2002
Jason at Security Muffler in North Bay did an excellent job of fabricating and installing my new exhaust. As mentioned below, it is a 2" cat-back with a Magnaflow Street Series muffler with 3" tip. It is a very clean install. The only modification necessary was to trim the bumper slightly so that the muffler would fit properly, but this is not noticeable.
The sound is pretty decent. It is a little louder inside than I would have liked, but I'll get used to it over time. From the outside, it is a fairly deep tone. The sound isn't exactly what I was hoping for, but I do like it anyway! I'll hopefully have some sound and/or video clips posted soon.
Rims and Tires Mounted, Exhaust Goes On Friday - April 1st, 2002
I've got some pics of the rims and tires now that I have a digital camera! The camera has already been a very good investment. I'll put the pics below. I am having a custom cat-back done at Security Muffler here in North Bay. He is doing 2" to a Magnaflow Street Series Polished Stainless Muffler. It will be a 4" Round Body muffler with a 3" Single Rolled Tip. Should sound very nice from what he tells me :-)
I've got my tires! - March 22nd, 2002
I dropped off my rims at Brook's Tire on Monday and I picked them up today with the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 P205/55R15 tires mounted on them. They are very sweet!! Too bad I can't put them on for another month! Stupid snow! I still haven't decided on what other upgrades to do. I can get the Thermal R&D cat-back from a place in Ottawa for $892 + tax. I'm waiting to see how much the HKS system will be from the Saturn Expression Series.
Still haven't bought anything yet... March 12th, 2002
All I have bought is the new pads and rotors. I'll be getting the windshield and tires for sure too. I'm going to pass on
the springs for now. Instead, I'm going to be doing some performance upgrades. I found out I will also be getting another $800 from my income tax return, so I think I will be going with a Hotshot header and a Thermal R&D Cat-Back Exhaust.
Finally Have Money To Buy Stuff - February 27th, 2002
Well, I re-did my loan today for another $2100 spread out over 3 years instead of two. So, what should I buy for my car with this money?
Here is what I am considering at the moment:
That list will completely take care of the money, but it will allow me to buy the things I need (tires, brakes, windshield) and the things I want (drop springs). I'll know soon what exactly I'll be buying!
- New Windshield - Mine is CRACKED!
- Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 P205/55R15 Tires
- New Front Pads and Rotors
- Eibach Pro-Kit Lowering Springs
February 27th, 2002
Me and Brian, Stacey, Mike and Shannon went down to Toronto for the International Auto Show on the weekend of February 15th. We had a great time!! Check out all the pictures at Brian's site, http://cowman.shacknet.nu/toronto200.html
Oh, and by the way, I'm not getting rid of my Yellow SC2 and I'm not converting it to manual tranny either! It would be a waste of money. If you hear me start to talk about it again, just hit me, ok?
January 15th, 2002
Yeah, so winter sucks. My car is a few steps closer to being ready for the spring. I had the windows tinted on Friday and I could finally open them again after they dried for the weekend. It looks a lot better with the windows tinted.
I'm still not sure what to do about the whole transmission thing. No matter what, I miss having a standard. However, one part of me wants to find a transmission and do the swap on this car. But another part says to leave it alone and if I really want a standard that bad, sell the Yellow one and buy something different. That is where the problem lies, I really don't want to get rid of the Yellow one! So I don't know what to do.
My parents are getting the windows tinted for me as a Christmas present! I'm going to have them tinted to whatever the legal limit is. They also got me a set of the rain guards that go above the windows on the doors. I'm not sure how they will look on the car, but with the tinted windows they should look good. I really need them cause the rain always drips right in even if you just crack the window open! I'm getting closer to having the car look exactly the way I want it to!
December 10th, 2001
Ok, so I decided not to buy that truck. I still get screwed for insurance, even on an old beater like that truck! That is the one down side about being a 19 year old male driver!
November 26th, 2001
I was driving around today and I found something that will hopefully cut down the amount of kilometers I put on my Saturn! I found a 1991 Chevy S-10 pickup for sale not too far from my house. The cab is in pretty good shape. The box is not bad, but it leaves a little to be desired. It's got a 2.8L TBI V6 with a 5-speed (YES!!!!!) transmission. It has about 170,000 km on it. The guy is looking for $1400 as-is or $1700 certified, but I think I could get it for $1600 certified, paid in cash. So, tomorrow I'm gonna check out all the financial details and see if I can make it work. I'm going to go test drive it this weekend and see what it is like on the road. If I buy it and use it for a lot of extra running around, it will really cut down on the kilometers on my car. I've got a little over 42,000 km on it now and I've only had it for 6 months! It is crazy!
Then depending on what happens when I start a new job in June, I might sell it or continue to fix it up based on what kind of job I find. The main goal is to cut back on the kilometers on the car!
November 15th, 2001
Today I installed the Ractive Adjustable Strut Tower Brace that I bought from Slick's Performance. It fits in there great and looks good!
We also put Brian's summer tires and rims on my car while I wait for my winter tires to be mounted on my stock rims. He has 15" 5-spoke ASA rims with P195/50R15 Sawa VR-rated tires. What an amazing difference in handling compared to those crap-ass Firestone GTA's!!! WOW!! I'm really looking forward to get my new tires in the spring. I'll only have Brian's tires on my car until tomorrow or Saturday, but at least I can see how much of a difference new tires will make!
