CANADA Stretching westward from the Atlantic Ocean to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, and northward from its border with the United States to the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean, Canada is a huge and fascinating land of contrasts. Although its area of nearly 4 million square miles (10 million square kilometers) makes it the second largest nation on Earth, after Russia, it has a population of only 8.3 persons per square mile (3.2 persons per square kilometer). By contrast, the population of China, a nation slightly smaller than Canada in area, is 40 times greater. Although from north to south Canada measures nearly 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers), more than two thirds of its nearly 29,500,000 residents live within 190 miles (300 kilometers) of its southern border with 12 states of the United States. |
