ONTARIO SPORT FISHING

Ontario’s quarter million lakes and countless rivers and streams provide some of the best fishing opportunities in Canada. From deep-water trolling to fly fishing, to casting from a boat or from shore, to dropping a line through the ice, Ontario offers an enormous variety of year-round fishing experiences. Ontario is fortunate to be blessed with such an abundant and varied sport fishery. The Ministry of Natural Resources’ wide range of fish management programs are helping to keep that fishery healthy and thriving.

The name Ontario comes from an Iroquois Indian word for Lake Ontario, variously translated as "sparkling water" or "rocks standing by the water," referring to Niagara Falls. The name of the provincial capital is also Indian in origin. Tarantou, meaning "place of meeting," was the site of a French settlement at the junction of trails leading north and westward.
